"Susanna Culp"
Susanna Culp
90" x 100"
Susanna Center
38" x 48"
This incredible quilt created in 1848 is steeped in history and has connections to Gettwsburg and the Civil War. The pattern was created from the original quilt by Brenda Papadakis who has given Dena Rosenberg permission to teach this wonderful quilt.
Students will learn the history of this quilt and the quiltmaker in this class. They will also have the choice to make the entire quilt (referred to as Susanna Culp), just the center (referred to as Susanna Center, or a teaching project (referred to as Susanna Teaching). The teaching project was created by Brenda Papadakis with all the elements in the large quilt but on a lot smaller scale.

The center of this quilt (Susanna Center) could stand on its own with just a simple binding around it with the finished size being 38" x 48". The teaching project (Susanna Teaching) is a finished size of 18" x 20". Borders can be added to make it larger.

"Bucklebury Manor"
Bucklebury Manor is a medallion quilt which was designed to accompany my beautiful fabric collection ‘Bucklebury Chintz’. The collection includes gorgeous florals reproduced from some early 19th century fabrics and quilts in my collection of antique textiles. The central block of the Bucklebury Manor medallion quilt is inspired by antique quilts featuring Broderie Perse from this period.
This beautiful octagonal block features an unusual vase, the construction of which was inspired by the main floral and bird print from the Bucklebury Chintz collection. The vase is filled with an abundance of flowers and is surrounded by birds and butterflies.
Join Michelle to learn the age-old technique of Broderie Perse. The sample block is needle turn appliquéd but can be blanket stitched if preferred and both techniques can be taught in class as desired.
The pattern for the centre medallion will be included in the class fee, however, it is part of a full-sized bed quilt. The complete pattern will be available for students to order if desired. An optional kit for the centre medallion will be available to students for purchase and will include the Bucklebury Chintz fabrics used in Bucklebury Manor. Alternatively, bring your own fabrics to complete this project.
Broderie Perse is only limited by your own imagination so you can copy the Bucklebury Manor centre medallion exactly or use it for inspiration to create your own interpretation of this gorgeous block.
